Still in the ecstasy of my future husband’s proposal, he surprised me with a one week trip to the intriguing and illustrious Goa. This famous coastal region in the south western part of India, is where unbeknown to my fiancé my parents enjoyed their honeymoon. Yet another sign from heaven, confirming our apparently predestined spiritual bond. We flew Kingfisher airlines from Pune to Goa and once we arrived checked into the gorgeous beach and riverside resort ‘The Leela’, where he booked a fantastic ocean side suite in which I was bathed in luxurious decadence.
This was not the typical hotel check in, since the highly impressive lobby features many beautiful cultural art works in a lounge setting, giving me the opportunity to take it in while winding down and getting into the vacation vibe.
Since my love arranged for a Jeep rental, which wasn’t done the way most are accustomed to but instead through a local private person, we enjoyed some welcoming drinks and hors d’oeuvres. After we were guided through the resort and escorted to our suite. I must have outed all the superlatives in my spontaneous reactions during this introduction into this blissful retreat.
I vividly remember freshening up in the semi-outdoor shower followed by a relaxing indoor jacuzzi bath, while listening to Buddha Bar music. Sliding into my most comfortable lounge clothing, I drape myself onto this great looking and comfortable colonial style bamboo couch with vintage woven cane, an extended base and silky soft cushions. The suite’s concept blending in- and outdoor living, made me gaze out of the large opened sliding glass doors to the beach and Arabian Sea behind the green grass dotted with palm trees. Sipping a Lemon and Lime Mint Crusher Soda and picking from the large fresh fruit platter, I clear my mind of all thoughts and seem to enter Nirvana.
We decided to try and hold onto this euphoric state of being and instead of venturing out, visit the beachside seafood restaurant Susegado in our comfies. This place certainly introduced us to Goa’s concept and either positive interpretation of ‘Susegad‘, since drinking cocktails and eating freshly caught seafood with our bare feet in the white sands and the sea’s surf on the background, is one of our most favorite pastimes for sure. Niels ordered a peach hookah with our after dinner apéritif while I indulged in a divine chocolate dessert. In-between courses we would hold hands and stroll over to the sea to get our feet wet, connecting with this wondrous place on earth.
Filled to the brim with delight, it overflowed when we opted to sneak into the pool area to take an after hours dip in relative privacy before heading for our royal Orient style bed carrying us to an Indian fairytale dreamworld on cloud nine. Awakening in ecstatic anticipation, I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and marvelled at the ease of Indian landscape gardeners climbing up the very high palm trees. This spectacle with tea and breakfast room service, was the perfect prelude to one of our most memorable days…..
